DuPont™ Styrofoam™ Brand Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Insulation has transitioned to a reduced GWP grey color in Canada and across select U.S. states starting January, 2021.
In the U.S., on Dec. 21, 2020, Congress passed the COVID-19 relief / bill. The Bill included the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act of 2019. DuPont supports a Federal HFC phase-down program that is consistent with the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. The U.S. federal program also aligns directly with our Shelter 2030 Sustainability Goal of 75% reduction in GHG emissions from 2019 levels. Further updates to come.

Beyond Blue

Performance that stands out. Aesthetics that blend in.

Styrofoam™ Brand blue is transitioning to grey

Along with a game-changing technology shift, we're transitioning the traditional blue to a new grey color — so you'll know it when you see it. But some things will never change: Styrofoam™ Brand XPS performance, its long-term value, plus our commitment to your project's success.

A path to positive change
We are reformulating Styrofoam™ Brand XPS to reduce global warming potential (GWP) and advance DuPont's 2030 Sustainability Goals.

It's only getting better
Reduced GWP Styrofoam™ Brand XPS offers the same thermal performance, moisture resistance, durability and ease-of-use you expect.

Styrofoam™ Brand XPS is ready to mingle
Perfect for modern open-joint cladding, rainscreens or any design where the external CI and drainage layer is visible.

Published EPDs and Embodied Carbon

DuPont’s Styrofoam™ Brand Insulation GWP Phase-Down program offers lower embodied carbon product solutions compliant with specific US HFC and Canada GWP Regulations without compromising on performance.
Remember: Embodied carbon should only be reported by manufacturers using third-party verified EPDs, and comparison of EPDs should be interpreted with caution due to complexity in modeling product life cycles and the lack of quantified uncertainty in reported values. Many factors, including embodied carbon and other sustainability considerations, should be used to guide product decisions.

*To convert kgCO2e/m2RSI to kgCO2e/bdft, divide by 12.24. The 12.24 factor was calculated by the following equations:
1m2RSI = 1m2 * 1.14 inch = 1.02 ft3 (where 1m2 = 10.76 ft2 and 1.14 in = 0.095 ft)
1bdft = 1ft2*in = 1ft2*(1/12 ft) = 0.0833 ft3
1.02/0.0833 = 12.24 m2RSI / bdft

More than meets the eye

The cell matrix of EPS foam allows the intrusion of water over time. The closed-cell structure Styrofoam™ Brand XPS Insulation is the design choice for buildings that withstand the elements and the test of time.

Closed-cell structure absorbs significantly less water than EPS products

XPS maintains R-value better than EPS when water is present

Absorbed water can cause damage in freeze/thaw conditions

Grey Styrofoam™ Brand XPS beyond blue.

We know that sustainability is more than just how our products are produced. It’s also about how they perform. Without compromising on quality, durability or thermal performance, we're introducing new Styrofoam™ Brand XPS formulations that reduce global warming potential (GWP) and embodied carbon. We're delivering products that have been evaluated by third party with certifications that meet or exceed standards on both sustainability and performance.

Move forward with grey Styrofoam™ Brand XPS

GWP reduction

GWP Reduction

Our history is rooted in innovation and Styrofoam™ Brand XPS is the industry leader – allowing us to deliver better, more-sustainable technology for modern building needs. The reduced GWP Styrofoam™ Brand XPS is another example of our long-term commitment to global sustainability and environmentally compliant building solutions.

DuPont™ Styrofoam™ Brand XPS Boardstock Insulation is transitioning to a reduced GWP grey color in Canada and HFC-regulated U.S. states starting January 1, 2021.

The change is easy to identify; we are modifying the color of reduced GWP Styrofoam™ Brand XPS from the traditional blue to the new grey. If you're in select U.S. states or Canada, you'll see the change first, with plans to expand the product offering going forward.

Above and beyond ensuring environmental compliance, we're continuing to advance our 2030 Sustainability Goals and invest in global efforts and technology innovations to help you design and build energy-efficient, resilient and durable structures in this rapidly changing world.

New color. Same value.

When you're protecting all six sides of the building envelope, the Styrofoam™ Brand product family has long been the choice for solid, consistent performance and energy efficiency. The reduced GWP Styrofoam™ Brand XPS formulations maintain the high levels of performance you've come to expect from the Styrofoam™ Brand.

Performance is not a color

Shield Therm

Reduced GWP Styrofoam™ Brand XPS delivers the same R-value — R-5 per inch thickness — for long-term thermal performance. The grey color lets you know it was made with a reduced global warming potential (GWP) formulation.

Rain Sun

With the same thermal performance, moisture resistance, durability and ease of use, this reduced GWP Styrofoam™ Brand XPS Insulation – along with our complete building envelope solutions – delivers protection that's a sure fit for all six sides.

The reduced GWP Styrofoam™ Brand products are compliant in select U.S. states and across Canada where sold. Refer to the Styrofoam™ Brand XPS Code Reports ICC-ESR 2142 and ICC-ESR 4755 in the U.S or CCMC 11420-L, 12085-L, and 04888-L in Canada for details.

Beauty below the surface.

The new grey color of reduced GWP DuPont™ Styrofoam™ Brand XPS is perfect for modern open-joint cladding, rainscreens or any design that calls for exterior, continuous insulation.

Styrofoam™ Brand XPS is ready to mix and mingle

When you need a dark reveal behind open-joint façade systems and rainscreen designs, the new grey Styrofoam™ Brand XPS has you covered. These rigid foam boards provide durable and highly efficient continuous insulation (CI) — preventing thermal bridging and adding great energy performance and sustainability to the structure.

Styrofoam™ Brand XPS resists stains, while other products can get unsightly dark stains. These stains can also be seen through the cladding on inadequately insulated wood and steel stud walls.

When you use new grey, reduced GWP Styrofoam™ Brand XPS, you will get aesthetics, performance and sustainability.
